Tips for the Next Disaster
Whether you learned about insurance claims the hard way or managed to survive the last catastrophe unscathed, a simple fact remains: Corpus Christi will suffer through future disasters. Below are a few tips to help you prepare for the next disaster:
- Review your insurance coverage – Do you have enough insurance coverage should a disaster wipe out your home? Do you have actual cash value or replacement cost value insurance on your personal property? Does your policy include provisions for inflation? Do you have endorsements in place covering for items typically excluded such as furs, fine jewelry, art, or coins?
- Create a home inventory – Go through your entire house, garage, and outbuildings – room by room – and document your belongings by taking photos or video of each item. Include pertinent details such as serial and model numbers, purchase price, date of purchase, and other descriptions. Keep your home inventory in a safe location away from home such as a safe deposit box at your bank or digitally stored online.
- Create an emergency disaster kit – Do you have enough food and water on hand for your entire family and pets to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours? What about batteries, flashlights, medications, diapers, toiletries, and other necessities. What about cash? The time to create an emergency disaster kit is long before an emergency. In other words: now.
Preparing for a disaster in advance is easier than you think, and it will save you a great deal of heartache should disaster strike.
